Trust & Quality

We welcome the hard questions.

Researchers and their institutions are rightly critical of AI in academic work. Here is exactly what YICCO does, what we guarantee, and what remains your responsibility.

Data & privacy principles

What happens to your data.

How YICCO handles your research, your identity, and your content.

Your IP stays yours

All intellectual property in generated outputs vests entirely with you. YICCO makes no ownership claim on any content produced on the platform.

Guaranteed by Terms of Service

EU data storage

All account information (email, name, institute) and all generated output is stored on servers in Frankfurt, under GDPR jurisdiction. Everything entered into or produced by the platform sits in the EU.

Stored in Frankfurt, EU

No AI training on your content

Each provider's API policy explicitly excludes training on submitted content. Your paper is used to generate output and nothing else.

Contractually enforced

Your account stays separate from AI calls

Your YICCO account credentials — name, email, password — are never included in any AI request. Note: papers themselves are not anonymised. Anything written in your uploaded paper (including author names and affiliations) is sent to AI providers as part of processing. If that's a concern for your work, please consider it before uploading.

Architectural separation

AI use clearly disclosed

YICCO discloses the AI-generated nature of all outputs in line with EU AI Act Article 50 requirements. Transparency is built into the workflow, not a small-print disclaimer.

Article 50 disclosure

Delete is delete

Account deletion removes all your data from all systems automatically. There are no manual steps that could be missed.

How this works in practice

The principles above, applied step by step as you use YICCO.

1

Upload paper

Stored in EU. AI generates your Narrative Flow questions.

2

Answer & generate

Your answers and paper sent to AI providers without account credentials.

3

Review & refine

Regenerations sent to AI providers.

4

Human Check (optional)

Specialist reviews with AI support, under the same rules.

5

Publish or export

Originals stay in EU until you delete them.

YICCO's architecture is built on 15 years of healthcare IT experience. The founding team ran a platform certified to ISO 27001 and NEN 7510 (the Dutch healthcare information security standard) for sensitive patient data. That experience shapes how we assess security and privacy risks in YICCO: we know what matters, where the real risks sit, and what it takes to address them properly.

One thing to be transparent about

When you generate or refine output, your paper, your Narrative Flow answers, and your review comments are sent to our AI providers, which are US-based. This is structural to how AI generation works and we don't want to obscure it. We notify you clearly at the point of upload, and Standard Contractual Clauses are in place with every provider. Your YICCO account credentials (name, email, password) are never sent along.

Access and visibility

Who can see your content.

A clear breakdown of who has access to your uploaded papers and generated outputs, when, and under what conditions.

You
When:At all times
Full access to your papers, drafts, and generated outputs.
Team colleagues
When:With a Team subscription
On a Team plan, colleagues on your team have the same access you do: your papers, drafts, and generated outputs. This supports collaboration within research groups and communications teams.
AI providers
When:Only during generation
Your paper text, Narrative Flow answers, and review comments — sent for processing without your YICCO account credentials (name, email, password) attached. Papers themselves are not anonymised: anything written in the paper is processed as-is. We use the strictest API settings, which means content is not used to train their models.
YICCO team
When:Limited and purposeful
When you contact us for support, when debugging or a security investigation requires it, or to analyse how users refine generated content so we can improve quality. You can opt out of this last use — see Terms of Service, section 32.
YICCO specialist
When:Only with Human Check
A YICCO science communication specialist reviews your current draft to support clarity and editorial quality. They use AI assistance under the same rules as content generation above.
Authorities
When:Only if legally required
In the rare case of a valid legal request from law enforcement or a regulator, we may be required to disclose information.
General audience
When:Only if you publish via YICCO
If you choose to publish your generated content through YICCO, that published output becomes publicly visible. Your original paper, Narrative Flow answers, review comments, and unpublished drafts always remain private.

Quality

What quality means to us.

Quality in science communication is more than a polished sentence. It's accuracy preserved, nuance respected, and the right story told to the right audience. The rest of this section explains how we think about AI's role in that, and the methodology we built to deliver it consistently.

Our view on AI

Human review is what makes AI-generated content better. YICCO already takes you most of the way there: our system dramatically reduces the error surface and enforces standards that a researcher or communications team using a generic tool cannot apply consistently on their own.

Your expert eye is what turns a strong draft into something truly publishable, and YICCO is designed to make that review as productive as possible — a thought-through head start, not a blank page.

How we ensure quality

Every output is generated from your actual paper and passes through a proprietary end-to-end methodology before you see it. The six steps below are our own, developed specifically for science communication, not adapted from a general-purpose AI workflow.

1Narrative Flow+

Before any content is generated, you answer targeted questions about your work's relevance, audiences, key finding, and the misconceptions it corrects. Your answers anchor all output in your own expert framing, not in what a generic AI defaults to.

2Science communication methodology+

Principles developed by a PhD scientist and science communicator are embedded directly in the generation process. Output is shaped from the first token by domain expertise, not by what sounds plausible on the internet.

3Format-specific standards+

Each content type (blog post, press release, interview, LinkedIn post) has its own quality criteria covering scientific nuance, accessible language, structure, and voice. These standards govern what the model can produce.

4Automated quality audit+

An independent quality layer runs on every output before you see it. Outcomes are logged per criterion, per version. You review content that has already passed a structured check. Quality is built into delivery, not added as an extra step.

5Continuous improvement+

Quality patterns are monitored across the platform. When recurring issues are found, output standards are updated and deployed platform-wide. Every user benefits from collective learning, something no individual researcher can replicate alone.

6Your review+

Full editorial control in a structured review environment before anything is published or exported. The optional Human Check adds a science communication specialist, a real scientist who understands your field, for an expert editorial layer.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered.

Why not just use ChatGPT?+

ChatGPT can simplify text, but simplification is not science communication. A general-purpose AI has no understanding of audience differentiation, scientific nuance conventions, or what makes a finding meaningful to a policymaker versus a journalist.

YICCO's methodology was built specifically for science communication. The Narrative Flow, output standards, and quality audit encode expertise that no prompt to a general model replicates. The result is the difference between a summary and a story.

How do you prevent hallucinations?+

Generation is grounded in your actual uploaded paper, not reconstructed from training data. The Narrative Flow anchors output in your own expert framing. And our automated quality audit checks for factual consistency with your source material before you see any result.

No system eliminates hallucination risk entirely. Your expert review is the essential final step, and YICCO is designed to make that review efficient, not to replace it.

Can I upload a paper before it's published?+

Yes — YICCO is designed for both published work and ongoing research. That said, you are responsible for assessing whether your material is too sensitive to share, and for confirming you have the right to process the content you upload. If you are unsure about pre-publication or otherwise sensitive material, check with your institution's research data officer before uploading.

Who owns the content YICCO generates?+

You do, completely. All intellectual property in generated outputs vests entirely with you. YICCO makes no claim on any content produced on the platform. Publish it, share it, or modify it however you like.

Is my paper used to train AI models?+

No. We configure every AI provider connection to disable training on API input. Each provider contractually confirms this. Your personal identity is also never sent to any AI provider; only the scientific content of your paper is processed.

Does YICCO meet our institution's compliance requirements?+

YICCO's Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and Acceptable Use Policy are publicly available. All data is stored in the EU under GDPR. We don't negotiate custom contracts: our terms are our terms, and they apply equally to every user.

For specific questions, contact hello@yicco.com.

Does YICCO disclose that content is AI-generated?+

Yes. YICCO discloses the AI-generated nature of all outputs in line with EU AI Act Article 50 requirements. This is built into the platform workflow: researchers are never misled about how their content was produced.
